Hamburg

Altona

1 Eisenstein Friedensallee 9, Altona. Glamorous restaurant and bar housed in the industrial space of a former factory – rather posey, but impressive nonetheless. Tasty pizzas and pasta alongside more substantial international dishes.

2 Elbeterassen Övelgönne 1. With deckchairs and an elevated unobstructed view over the river, this is the stuff sundowners are made of.

3 Hamburg del Mar Van-der-Smissen-Strasse 4, Altona Less flashy city beach bar than neighbour Lago Bay, which means more space, more sand and (usually) a more laid-back vibe. The Strandkörbe on a terrace that juts into the river are a superb spot to while away an evening. Opening time: Open summer only

4 Lago Bay Van-der-Smissen-Strasse 4, Altona White sand, white sofas and an open tent with a glass chandelier make this a passable attempt at St Tropez sophistication at this city beach bar. Young families come for the small swimming pool by day, club nights are scheduled at weekends. Opening time: Open summer only

5 Strandperle Schulberg 2, Altona The first and for many locals still the best of the Hamburg beach bars: no fuss, just a shack and a deck on the beach beyond the boats at Övelgönne where the beautiful people from Altona hang out and top up tans. Opening time: Open summer only
