The Schanzenviertel
1 Golden Pudel Club Fischmarkt 27, Altona
www.pudel.com A party crowd sardines into one room for everything from throbbing electro to Jamaican dancehall and spills onto the street around this oversized shack – very trashy, very random. Rocks on Saturday nights, when the nearby Fischmarkt provides a perfect carry-on.
2 Grüner Jäger Neuer Pferdemarkt 36
www.gruener-jaeger-stpauli.de . A pretension-free bar-club that provides a good-times mix of Sixties soul, cheesy Eighties and Nineties rock and pop or indie depending on the night, all spun in a hunting lodge gone disco.
3 Waagenbau Max-Brauer-Allee 204
www.waagenbau.com Breaks, super-heavy funk, dubstep, drum ‘n' bass and electro, plus reggae on Mondays in a grungy favourite of the Schanzenviertel scene.
4 Uebel und Gefährlich Feldstr. 66
www.uebelundgefaehrlich.com The gritty Hamburg Szene in a nutshell, this is one of the city's most interesting venues, partly for its being on an upper floor of a concrete war bunker in the Schanzenviertel, but also for a roster of hip alternative acts – always worth checking out. Kicking club-nights, too.
