A little to the west of Rathausplatz along Philippine-Welser-Strasse, the sixteenth-century Welserhaus, with its eighteenth-century classical facade, and the gabled house of the patrician Köpf family, which dates from 1578, provide suitable neighbours for the beautiful Maximilianmuseum, a sixteenth-century merchant's house which now houses the city's principal historical and applied art collections. The highlight is the section dedicated to the fabulously skilled silver- and goldsmiths whose work brought Augsburg international renown.
