0821/503 60 Attractive French-style bistro open from 9am daily, serving breakfast, French dishes and – bizarrely – curries. There are also daily specials.
2 August Frauentorstr. 27 0821 35279 Classy, modern gourmet restaurant in the northern Altstadt, with the likes of Breton calamari with black curry and trompettes de mort to tempt the palate. Five-course menu €86; seven courses €99. They also do a veggie seven-course dinner for €80. Opening time: Wed– Sat, eve only
3 Café Dichtl Bahnhofstr. cnr Schrannenstr. 0821/52 50 30 Big café-Konditorei with impressive cakes, chocolates and a limited menu of inexpensive hot meals. Open daily.
4 Cisa Anoniushof, Maximilianstr. 55 0821/608 44 91 Very stylish, modern café/bar and bistro; open for breakfast from 8am daily, it also serves Kaffee und Kuchen and full meals. There are seats outside in the Hof in fine weather.
5 Die Ecke Elias-Holl-Platz 2 0821/51 06 00 Snug, intimate and long-established gourmet restaurant just behind the Rathaus, with refined cooking that embraces German and other influences. Evening set menus €59/68; the two-course €16 lunch is an absolute bargain. Opening time: Open daily for lunch and dinner
6 EKU 34 Hunoldsgraben 34 0821/392 94. Vibrantly decorated restaurant in a vaulted cellar in the Altstadt, with regular dinner shows; the food is good but can be over-creative, though they also serve straightforward steaks. Main courses €16 up. Gay friendly, but by no means exclusively gay.
7 Fuggerei Stube Jakoberstr. 26 0821/308 70 Charmingly old-fashioned place at the front of the Fuggerei, serving Schnitzel, Zwiebelrostbraten (a traditional beef dish with onions) and the like from around €12 beneath its vaulted ceilings and stone capitals. They also do salads.
8 Ratskeller Rathausplatz 2 0821/31 98 82 38 Despite its historic setting in the cavernous undercroft of the Rathaus there's a surprisingly bustling, contemporary feel here. It serves a short menu of German classics, plus Flammkuchen and Bavarian-style tapas, with cocktails or Riegele beer to wash it down. Opening time: Daily from 11am; kitchen closes at 11pm
9 Schlemmerhäusl Karolinenstr. 2. Tiny delicatessen that serves wholesome, bargain-priced lunches for little more than the price of a burger. Opening time: Mon– Fri 9am–7pm, Sat until 4pm

Stadtmarkt Between Fuggerstr. and Annastr. The covered hall of Augsburg's market is a wonderful place for a cheap lunch if you don't mind eating at a counter, with everything from Bratwurst and Schnitzel to Chinese and Greek food. The queues build up fast, though. Opening time: Closed Sun
