0821/608 44 91 Very stylish, modern café/bar and bistro; open for breakfast from 8am daily, it also serves Kaffee und Kuchen and full meals. There are seats outside in the Hof in fine weather.

0821/392 94. Vibrantly decorated restaurant in a vaulted cellar in the Altstadt, with regular dinner shows; the food is good but can be over-creative, though they also serve straightforward steaks. Main courses €16 up. Gay friendly, but by no means exclusively gay.

0821/308 70 Charmingly old-fashioned place at the front of the Fuggerei, serving Schnitzel, Zwiebelrostbraten (a traditional beef dish with onions) and the like from around €12 beneath its vaulted ceilings and stone capitals. They also do salads.

0821/31 98 82 38 Despite its historic setting in the cavernous undercroft of the Rathaus there's a surprisingly bustling, contemporary feel here. It serves a short menu of German classics, plus Flammkuchen and Bavarian-style tapas, with cocktails or Riegele beer to wash it down. Opening time: Daily from 11am; kitchen closes at 11pm
9 Schlemmerhäusl Karolinenstr. 2. Tiny delicatessen that serves wholesome, bargain-priced lunches for little more than the price of a burger. Opening time: Mon– Fri 9am–7pm, Sat until 4pm

Stadtmarkt Between Fuggerstr. and Annastr. The covered hall of Augsburg's market is a wonderful place for a cheap lunch if you don't mind eating at a counter, with everything from Bratwurst and Schnitzel to Chinese and Greek food. The queues build up fast, though. Opening time: Closed Sun
