In the 1890s, Bremen merchants staged a grand exhibition of curios to show off their global reach. The Übersee-Museum, an ethnological museum it fathered, groups around a pair of courtyards as a comprehensive if rather didactic tour of the continents which sparks into life when exhibits are liberated from showcases: a Japanese garden and African village; a Polynesian paradise in huts, boats and palms; and a lovely early twentieth-century coffee merchant's shop, all faded tins on tidy shelves.
