    1 Aladin/Tivoli Hannoversche Str. 9–11 www.aladin-bremen.de Rock, metal and goth clubs and acts, plus oldies' nights in a venue going strong since 1977.

    2 Modernes Neustadtswall 28 www.modernes.de Bremen's best nightclub, one of the few with midweek nights, is in a former cinema in the Neustadt south of the Weser. Expect nights of indie or classic disco, funk and party house plus the occasional gig midweek, all ventilated by a sliding domed roof.

    3 Stubu Rembertiring 21 www.stubu.de A multi-room palace to mainstream clubbing spread over five themed rooms; their soundtrack ranges from hip-hop and r'n'b to Sixties via chart sounds and electro. Always packed with a young party crowd.

    4 Ting! Rembertiring 1 www.ting-club.de Electro and breaks from visiting DJs, plus nights of dancehall and reggae on Fridays and the occasional rock and metal thrash on Wednesdays. One of the more appealing options on the strip.

    5 Die Glocke Domsheide 4–5 0421/33 66 99 www.glocke.de Bremen's grand old concert hall, renowned for fine acoustics and host to both the Bremener Philharmoniker and the acclaimed Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, Bremen's chamber orchestra. Some jazz gigs scheduled.

    6 Schlachthof Findorffstr. 51 0421/37 77 50 www.schlachthof-bremen.de World music, cabaret and theatre, and art and photography exhibitions in a cultural centre north of the Hauptbahnhof created from a former abattoir. Its bar screens all Werder Bremen games (free).

    7 Theater am Goetheplatz Goetheplatz 0421/365 33 33 www.bremertheater.com The most prestigious stage in town hosts heavyweight opera, operettas and dance. Affiliated Neues Schauspielhaus (Ostertorsteinweg 57a; same contacts) is the city's leading dramatic stage – expect modern classics and avant-garde.
