The Focke-Museum is largely overlooked, which is a shame for a complex whose well-presented exhibits span over a millennium of local history and culture. Bremen's obsession with the Weser River and trade is a leitmotif: exhibits chronicle the Hanseatic seafarers and the elegant glassware and Fürstenberg porcelain prized by the merchant elite are displayed, appropriately, in an aristocrat's Baroque summerhouse. The original Rathaus statues of Charlemagne and the prince-electors are also here, balanced by displays of rural life in one of three historic half-timbered barns rebuilt in the parkland.
