Drinking

1st Class Suicide Auf den Höfen Funky little bar at the end of the alley hosted by a speed metal guitarist.

2raumlounge Auf den Höfen Not as sophisticated as it likes to think, but a decent lounge bar-club nonetheless with a mainstream soundtrack of chart tunes.

Bistro Brazil Ostertorsteinweg 83 Owners claim they mixed North Germany's first caipirinha in 1983, and it's still the pick in a cocktail bar with four happy hours (6–10pm) and an older clientele.

Café Engel Ostertorsteinweg 31 One-time chemist's now a laid-back gastropub at the heart of the Viertel that serves tasty pastas.

Café Sand Strandweg 106 Beach culture comes to Bremen as a cool conservatory bar-café on the south bank of the Weser – a passenger ferry shuttles from a quay on Osterdeich, near the junction with Sielwall (single €1.20, return €2). Weekends only in winter.

Drei Jahr Fehrfeld 58 Chandeliers and vintage furnishings in a relaxed retro-styled wine- and cocktail bar in the Viertel. Decent food menu, too.

Lemon Lounge Am Wall 164 A former strip-club at the top of a spiral staircase that's still slightly seedy – arguably part of the attraction of this small clubby bar. Mon– Sat from 8pm.

Spitzen Gebel Hinter dem Schütting 1. A splendid cocoon of old wood and brass in the oldest Bürgerhaus in Bremen (1348) with just enough space for a few tables. House speciality is a liqueur named "Sluk ut de Lamp" distilled to a secret recipe. Closed Sun.
