1 Hotel am Schloss restaurant Burgsteige 18
07071/929 40 Said by many to serve the best Maultaschen in the Land; and there's certainly an excellent selection of these regional giant ravioli, with 23 varieties – including veggie options – on the menu. Many are seasonal, like the trout or asparagus, but all are under €10, and there are fine views from the outdoor terrace too.
2
Ratskeller Haagasse 4
07071/213 91 Upmarket traditional dishes served behind, rather than in, the Rathaus. Great for meat dishes, such as the excellent pork medallion in a Cognac cream sauce, but also known for its giant pancakes.
3 Weinstube Forelle Kronenstr. 8
07071/240 94 Traditional wine bar and local favourite which oozes old-world charm; its walls are painted with cherubs, vines and heraldic crests. Known for its regional ingredients and cooking, the trout (Forelle) in almond butter is particularly good, as is the game. There's also a good selection of salads and some good local wines.
4 Die Würstkuche Am Lustnauer Tor 8
07071/927 50 No-nonsense roasts and doughy Swabian noodles are on the menu in this country-style restaurant in the west of town. Sensational Maultaschen too. Inexpensive and very popular, though it's spread over two floors, so getting a seat is rarely a problem.
5 Tangente Jour Münzgasse 17
07071/245 72 Café near the Stiftskirche and with great Altstadt atmosphere, which specializes in breakfast and light meals – excellent bagels and seasonal salads – but also serves several local beers until 1am.
6
Neckarmüller Gartenstr. 4
07071/278 48 Far and away the best beer garden in town, attached to a microbrewery. Also does good basic dishes, particularly bargain lunches, veggie choices and good Maultaschen. Mains average €10 and it's open – and usually heaving – nightly until 1am.
