One of Germany's finest art galleries, Karlsruhe's Staatliche Kunsthalle, is strong on works by late Gothic masters such as Cranach the Elder, Dürer, Burgkmair and Baldung as well as Matthias Grünewald, whose emotional Crucifixion gets centre stage. Equally accomplished are the Dutch, Flemish and French sections – the latter features Delacroix and Courbet as well as Impressionists Degas, Manet, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir and Sisley. Local talent is represented by a glut of nineteenth-century work by Black Forest native Hans Thoma who served as gallery director for twenty years, while members of Der Blaue Reiter group also get a look in, particularly Beckmann, Marc and Kokoschka.
