Occupying Karlsruhe's Schloss, the Badisches Landesmuseum is effectively the vault of Baden's royal family. Along with their jewelled crown, sword and sceptre, there's a bevy of medieval art and sculpture and a prodigious number of war trophies from Ludwig Wilhelm's seventeenth-century Ottoman campaigns. Known as the Türtenbeute (Turkish spoils), these are testament to the sophistication of the Ottoman Empire of the time: the embroidery, books, jewellery, leather and wood crafts are exquisitely made and the hoard of grim and powerful weapons demonstrate what an impressive feat victory over the Turks was. Of more local interest is the museum's strong collection of regional archeology: finds include Assyrian ivory carvings and impressive Roman sculptures, with two stand-out nautical gods.
