1 Café Brenner Karlstr 61a A coffee house since 1896 and good place for that mid-afternoon sugar rush from its selection of great cakes.
2 Café Salomon Hans-Thoma-Str. 3
0721/921 20 80 Small café opposite the Staatliche Kunsthalle with a good line in bagels, soups and some cakes.
3 Casa Aposto Ludwigsplatz Good Italian restaurant with €4.90 lunch specials as well as good pizzas, pastas and salads. The home-made Italian ice-cream is also first class and the outdoor seating on a convivial square makes it a place to linger.
4 El Taquito Waldstr. 22–24 All the usual Tex-Mex favourites averaging an inexpensive €6 per dish and served indoors or outside in a quiet courtyard. Also offers a reasonable Saturday brunch (noon–3pm, €8.50).
5 Lehner's Wirtshaus Karlstr 21 Hip place but still good for its range of inexpensive traditional favourites; set lunches are good value at €4.90 as is the crispy Flammkuchen at €7. A good place for breakfast too, served from 10am.
6 Oberländer Weinstube Akademiestr. 7 Venerable wine bar and bistro with eight hundred wines and a gourmet menu to match – most mains cost around €20. Opening time: Closed Sun & Mon
7 Der Saftladen Waldstr. 54 Another bohemian place on this stretch of Waldstrasse, with first-class smoothies and coffees; good for a bowl of muesli early in the day too.
8 Viva Rathaus-Passage, Lammstr. 7 Laudable self-service vegetarian place, with excellent salads and several hot options too. Pay by the weight of your plate, which can mean that if you pile it high, you're in for a shock. Opening time: Closed Sat eve & Sun
