    5 Chez Mounier 3 rue des Marronniers, 2e 04.78.37.79.26 M Bellecour Good-value menus from €11 at this unpretentious bouchon. Serves imaginative dishes, such as tripe and cognac soufflé.

    6 Café des Fédérations 8 rue du Major-Martin 1er 04.78.28.26.00 M° Hôtel-de-Ville Typical bouchon serving the earthiest of Lyonnais specialities (marinated tripe and black pudding).     7 Le Grand Café des Négociants 1 place Francisque Regaud, 1er 04.78.42.50.05; M Cordeliers. Despite a position on a busy road, this place attracts the punters for its sumptuous cuisine and sophisticated decor. Meat dishes go for up to €38 but pasta is cheaper at €14.

    11 Notre Maison 2 rue de Gadagne, 1er 04.72.41.78.48; M Vieux Lyon. "Salad is for goats", or so this bouchon claims. Expect meat, meat and more meat, with a bit of fish thrown in there. Price: Menus from €19

    12 Paul Bocuse 40 rue de la Plage, Collonges-au-Mont-d'Or 04.72.42.90.90 Lyon's most famous restaurant, named after its celebrity chef-owner, is 9km north of the city, on the west bank of the Saône. Traditional French gastronomy is the bill of fare.Price: Menus from €125 upwards
