1 Académie de la Bière 43 rue Lavoisier Just up from the cathedral this is a lively, student-friendly place, with an excellent range of beers and plenty of outdoor seating for good weather.
2 Le Palais 15 place Jean Jaurès If you're around during the university term, it might be worth a visit on a Monday night, where the Café des langues allows you to speak in a variety of different languages to the students.
3 Les Trois Orfèvres 6 rue des Orfèvres Even in summer, when local students are away, the nightclubs just off place Plumereau fill up with backpackers, locals and language students, though things don't usually get going until past midnight.
