You'll be offered a good choice of seafood as well as beef, veal and other local fare. The lunchtime formule is just €12, while three-course menus start at €25, or €42 in the evening.     2 Chez Alphonse 5 place de la Motte 05.55.34.34.14 Welcoming and popular brasserie, complete with red-check cloths and bustling waiters, which specializes in local dishes such as pig's trotters and sweetbreads, plus a broader range of daily specials.     3 Author Pick Chez François place de la Motte For a good-value lunch and a lively atmosphere, head straight to the central market hall to join the locals round communal tables. Colourful pictures of market life adorn the walls. Price: Menus €10 & €17 If it's full, try the Bistrot d'Olivier next door. Opening time: Closed Sun & Aug.

    4 Crêperie de la Cathédrale 3 rue Haute-Cité One of a cluster of brasseries with outside seating on this attractive pedestrian street by the cathedral. It's good value at lunchtime, with a plat du jour, dessert and drink for €10.

    5 La Paranthèse Cour du Temple Tucked away in an attractive courtyard off rue du Temple, this is a great place for a light lunch or tea break. They offer various formules including a drink and one of their scrumptious deserts from €13.50, as well as good, fresh salads and a plat du jour Opening time: Closed evenings & Sun.

    6 Les Petits Ventres 20 rue de la Boucherie 05.55.34.22.90 This surprisingly elegant restaurant in a timbered, seventeenth-century building will delight lovers of brain, brawn, tongue and other unmentionable cuts – though they also do plenty of more everyday dishes and even a vegetarian platter. You'll pay €14.50 for a lunchtime formule, while three-course menus start at €23.50. Opening time: Closed Sun & Mon
