The Côte d'Azur

Getting around

Buses are frequent and run until early evening (roughly 7.30–9pm), after which five Noctambus night buses serve most areas from Station Bermand close to place Masséna until 1.10am. Fares are flat rate and you can buy a single ticket (€1), a Multi+ carnet of twenty tickets (€20), or a day pass (€4) on the bus; a ten-journey multipass (€10) and seven-day passes (€15) are available from tabacs, kiosks, newsagents and from Ligne d'Azur, the transport office, at 3 place Masséna, where you can also pick up a free route map. One line of the long-heralded tramway system is now in operation, though it's of relatively limited relevance to visitors as the route concentrates on linking the inland suburbs with the city centre; trams run until 1.35am.

Taxis around town are scarce, and cost €1.62 per kilometre by day; night rates (7pm–7am and all day at weekends) are €2.16 per kilometre. There are various surcharges. Scams are not unknown: if a restaurant or bar calls a cab for you, it's possible you'll enjoy a luxurious ride home in a top of the range Mercedes – with a hefty bill at your journey's end.
