Getting around

Marseille has an efficient bus and métro network, supplemented by two gleaming new tram lines. The métro runs from 5am until 10.30pm on weekdays and until after midnight at weekends; trams run from 5am to after midnight. Night buses run from 9.30pm to around 12.30am. You can get a plan of the transport system from RTM at 6 rue des Fabres (Mon– Fri 8.30am–6pm, Sat 9am–12.30pm, 2–5.30pm; www.rtm.fr ), one street north of La Canebière near the Bourse. Tickets are flat rate for buses, trams and the métro and can be used for journeys combining all three as long as they take less than one hour. You can buy individual tickets (€1.70) from bus and tram drivers, and from métro ticket offices, or multi-journey Cartes Libertés (in increments of €6 and €12), which are valid for five and ten journeys respectively; these can be bought from métro stations, RTM kiosks and shops displaying the RTM sign. You should also consider the good-value one-day Carte Journée (€4.50) or three-day Carte 3 Jours (€10). Tickets must be punched in the machines on the bus, on tramway platforms or at métro gates.
