The Alps and Franche-Comté

Arrival

The Grenoble-Isère airport ( 04.76.65.48.48 www.grenoble-airport.com ) lies some 45km to the north west of the city. It is served by several low-cost airlines; most of the flight connections are with Britain and Ireland, although there are some less frequent services to Amsterdam. There are buses every hour from the airport to the gare routière in Grenoble (45min; €4). There are also regular buses between the gare routière and the (much larger) Lyon Saint Exupéry airport (1 hr; €20).

The gare SNCF and the gare routière are next door to each other at the western end of avenue Félix-Viallet, just ten-minutes' walk from the most interesting sections of the city, which are mainly on the left bank of the Isère. The transport network, combining bus and tram routes, has the bleak place de Verdun as its hub. Single tickets for both bus and tram cost €1.30 and ten-ticket strips cost €10.90.
