The Alps and Franche-Comté
Getting around
With regard to transport, the more remote areas of the Alps and Jura are difficult to reach without a car, but are best explored once you're there on foot or by bicycle. Nonetheless, there are frequent trains between the major towns and resorts, while during the skiing season of December– April and the summer months of July and August, more bus services become available. Car-drivers should remember that some high passes in the east of the region, including the Col du Galibier and the Col de l'Iseran, can remain closed well into June. This can force you to make long detours into Italy via expensive Alpine tunnels.
