Arrival
Both the gare SNCF on boulevard St-Roch and the adjacent gare routière are close to Porte de la République, on the south side of the old city. The TGV station is near the hospital 2km south of the city centre; regular shuttles connect the TGV station with the bus stop on avenue President Kennedy (daily 5.38am–11.20pm; €2.50); passengers are picked up or dropped off next to the post office, a short walk from the main tourist office. The city's main local bus information centre can be found at 1 avenue de Lattre de Tassigny, a two-minute walk from Porte de la République. From Cité Administrative all buses go to place de l'Horloge. Tickets may be bought from drivers and at TCRA (Transports en Commun de la Région d'Avignon;
www.tcra.fr ) kiosks throughout town (€1.10 each; €9.40 for a book of ten). Driving into Avignon involves negotiating a nightmare of junctions and one-way roads. The best parking option is the free, guarded car park on the Île de Piot, between Avignon and Villeneuve; a free shuttle runs every 10min (Mon– Fri 7.30am–8.30pm, Sat 1.30–8.30pm; during festival daily 7.30am–2.30am; end of festival to mid-Aug daily 7.30am–8.30pm) between the car park and Porte de l'Oulle; otherwise parking inside the city walls is expensive and often full, starting at €1.50 for 1hour.
