The social heart of the city was the impeccably classical Grand Théâtre. Built on the site of a Roman temple by the architect Victor Louis in 1780, this lofty building is faced with an immense colonnaded portico topped by twelve Muses and Graces. Inside, the interior is likewise opulently decorated with trompe l'oeil paintings; the best way to see it is to attend one of the operas or ballets staged throughout the year, with seats in the gods from as little as €8, or ask at the tourist office about the guided tours they offer from time to time (€6).
