Poitou-Charentes and the Atlantic coast

Centre National Jean-Moulin

    Opening time: Tues– Sun 2–6pm

    Price: Free

Continuing to circle clockwise round the cathedral, you'll pass the Centre National Jean-Moulin, an interesting museum dedicated to the local Resistance, featuring a history of the occupation of Bordeaux and a harrowing permanent exhibit of Holocaust-inspired paintings by French artist J.J. Morran, before reaching the imaginatively laid-out Musée d'Aquitaine, on cours Pasteur (Tues– Sun 11am–6pm; free), one of the city's best museums, tracing its development since Roman times through a variety of objects and art. If archeological bric-a-brac is not your bag you might want to move swiftly through the ground floor, but the upstairs is more varied, including a section on the wine trade and some documentary films with old footage of pre-war Aquitaine life.
