A/c comes as standard, and rooms are decorated with posters of Bordeaux. Also an option for families; they will put two rooms together for €90 and offer free breakfast to children. Price: €51-65

Its light, bright rooms are well proportioned, with big beds to match, and provide three-star comforts such as minibar, a/c and internet access in the rooms. Price: €66-80

All rooms are in good condition, though you pay slightly more for en-suite facilities or a television. Very backpacker-friendly, with left-luggage and kitchen facilities thrown in. Price: Up to €40
8 Studio 26 rue Huguerie 05.56.48.00.14 studio@hotel-bordeaux.com Easily the best deal in town, offering simple single rooms with shower and TV for a paltry €19, so very popular with backpackers. There's not much soundproofing though, so your night's sleep is slightly pot luck. Price: Up to €40
9 De la Tour Intendance 14–16 rue de la Vieille-Tour 05.56.44.56.56 www.hotel-tour-intendance.com Located just off place Gambetta in one of the towers of the old city wall, the standard rooms are nothing out of the ordinary, but there are excellent views from higher up. Definitely worth asking for a room at the top. Price: €81-100
