    2 Bekaa 60 rue de Fontenelle 02.35.15.58.58 If all the Norman cuisine gets too much, head to this cosy Lebanese restaurant close to the place du Vieux-Marché. A variety of mezze menus are on offer, including an €16 vegetarian option.

    3 Brasserie Paul 1 place de la Cathédrale 02.35.71.86.07 The definitive address for Rouen's definitive bistro, an attractive belle-époque place with seating both indoors and on a terrace in full view of the cathedral. Daily lunch specials, such as the goat's cheese and smoked duck salad that was Simone de Beauvoir's favourite in the 1930s, cost around €11.

    4 Author Pick Chez Nous 234 rue Martainville 02.35.89.50.02 Deservedly popular bistro with a cosy interior and some outdoor seating. The small daily menu of modern French dishes offers a choice of four starters, main courses and desserts. 2 courses €6.50, 3 courses €19.50.

    5 Chez Pepe 10–12 rue du Vieux Palais 02.35.07.44.94 Rather smart pizza restaurant with a wide choice of tasty pizzas for two, making it an excellent option for those on a budget. Also has a children's menu.

    6 Crêperie la Regalière 12 rue Massacre 02.35.15.33.33 Quaint country-style crêperie near the Gros Horloge, whose excellent galettes and crêpes draw crowds of locals. Opening time: Closed Sun

    7 Dame Cakes 70 rue St Romain 02.35.07.49.31 Elegant tearoom on a quiet street next to the cathedral, tempting the tastebuds with delicious desserts, savoury tarts and salads.

    8 Flunch 60 rue des Carmes 02.35.71.81.81 Efficient, popular self-service on a street running north from the cathedral, with many fresh dishes, starters and desserts, and a €5.60 daily formule. Unlimited vegetables with any hot dish, or an all-you-can-eat salad for €4.40.

    9 Gill 9 quai de la Bourse 02.35.71.16.14 Absolutely definitive French restaurant with specialities such as lobster grilled with asparagus and pigeon baked in puff pastry. Weekday lunch menus start at €40 (not bad value considering the quality), while the most expensive dinner menu will set you back €85. Opening time: Closed Sun & Mon, plus three weeks in Aug

    10 Le Marmite 3 rue de Florence 02.35.71.75.55 Romantic little place just west of the place du Vieux-Marché, offering beautiful, elegantly presented gourmet dishes as part of well-priced menus at €25, €35 (featuring hot foie gras) and €50. Opening time: Closed Sun evening, Mon, & Tues lunch

    11 Les Petits Parapluies 46 rue Bourg l'Abbé, place de la Rougemare 02.35.88.55.26 Opening time: Closed Sat lunch, Sun evening & MonChic and secluded half-timbered restaurant not far north of the Hôtel de Ville. The place to go to splash out: set menus start at €28, but the quality of the rather fancy food is high.
