Arrival

Vehicle access to Rouen has been improved somewhat by the construction of the new Pont Gustave Flaubert, the city's sixth and largest bridge across the Seine, which connects the motorways just west of the city. Many of the central streets, north of the river, have in any case been pedestrianized, so it's best to park as soon as you can – there are plenty of central underground car parks, especially near the cathedral and the place du Vieux-Marché – and explore the city on foot.

The main gare SNCF, Gare Rive Droite, stands at the north end of rue Jeanne-d'Arc. It's connected to the centre by a métro system, which follows the line of the rue Jeanne-d'Arc, making two stops before it resurfaces to cross the river by bridge. Individual journeys cost €1.40 and a book is €10.50. One-, two- and three-day passes are also available, priced €3.70, €5.40 and €7 respectively. All buses from the gare SNCF except #2A run down rue Jeanne-d'Arc to the centre, which takes five minutes. From the fifth stop, the "Théâtre des Arts" by the river, the gare routière is one block west in rue des Charettes, tucked away behind the riverfront buildings ( 02.35.52.92.00).
