4 Dauphin 29 rue Gémare 02.31.86.22.26 www.le-dauphin-normandie.com Upmarket hotel, tucked away behind the tourist office. Part of it was a priory during the eighteenth century, although this isn't immediately obvious. The public areas are impressive, while the rooms are comfortable but relatively compact, at least at the lower end of the price scale. Sauna and fitness facilities and free wi-fi access. Grand restaurant, with an €19 weekday dinner menu; weekend menus €30 and €52 (restaurant closed Sat lunch & Sun all year, and open for dinner only June– Sept). Price: €81-100

6 St-Étienne 2 rue de l'Académie 02.31.86.35.82 www.hotel-saint-etienne.com Friendly budget hotel housed an old stone house in the characterful St-Martin district, not far from the Abbaye des Hommes. The cheaper rooms share bathrooms, but en-suite ones cost little more. Price: €41-50
