Arrival
Caen's small, modern airport, 7km west just outside Carpiquet (
02.31.71.20.10), is served by buses (€1.30) connecting with all services, taking 25 minutes to run to and from the Tour-le-Roi stop in place Courtonne. Avis (
02.31.34.88.89), Budget (
02.31.83.70.47) and Rent A Car (
02.31.84.10.10) provide car hire both in the terminal and in town.
The gare SNCF (
08.36.35.35.35) is a kilometre's walk south of the town centre across the river, with the gare routière alongside. An extensive network of local buses and trams is run by TWISTO (
02.31.15.55.55,
www.twisto.fr ), which has ticket and information centres at 15 rue de Geôle (just north of the tourist office), and on boulevard Maréchal-Leclerc. The main tram route connects the southern and northern suburbs, running through the heart of the city from the gare SNCF up avenue de 6-Juin to the university and beyond. To get from the train station to the centre, take trams #1 or #11 (€1.27).
