    3 Des Arts 1bis rue Cantegril 05.61.23.36.21, 05.61.12.22.37 On a corner diagonally opposite the Augustins museum, this is a top choice in the lower price range, with large, quirky rooms (some with a fireplace) in a superb old building. Price: €41-50

    4 Beausejour 4 rue Caffarelli 05.61.62.77.59 hotelbeausejour@cegetel.net Basic, but dirt-cheap and with a great copper-balconied facade and soundproofed rooms. Best of the hotels in the slightly dodgy but engagingly gritty neighbourhood around place de Belfort. Price: Up to €40

    8 Grand Hôtel de l'Opéra 1 place du Capitole 05.61.21.82.66 www.grand-hotel-opera.com . The grand dame of Toulouse's hotels presides over the place du Capitole in the guise of a seventeenth-century convent. The rich decor, peppered with antiques and artwork, underlines the atmosphere of sophistication. Has a fitness centre for working off that second helping of foie gras. Price: €151-200

Right by the covered market and steps from the Capitole, this welcoming hotel is one of the city's better bargains. Recently redecorated, each room now has TV, a/c, wi-fi and telephone, as well as a private bath. Price: €66-80

    11 St-Sernin 2 rue St-Bernard 05.61.21.73.08 www.hotelstsernin.com Well-renovated old hotel in one of the best districts of the old town, around the basilica – close to all the action, but far enough away to provide peace in the evening. Price: €66-80

    12 Terminus 13 bd Bonrepos 05.61.62.44.78 www.terminus31.com This old three-star station-side hotel has large, reconditioned rooms that make it worth the price, and there are special room prices for off-season weekends. Parking and buffet breakfast (€8) available; however, it is rather far from the sights. Price: €66-80
