    1 L'Ambassade 22 bd de la Gare Downbeat club where funk and soul rule. Live jazz on Sun nights. Opening time: Mon– Fri 7pm–2am, Sat & Sun 7pm–5am

    2 Bodega-Bodega 1 rue Gabriel-Péri The old Telegraph newspaper building makes a superb venue for this bar-restaurant, with its hugely popular disco after 10pm. Opening time: Daily 7pm–2am, till 4am on Sat

    3 Le Chat d'Oc 7 rue de Metz Hip bar near the Garonne, attracting a mixed crowd which gets younger as the night progresses. Nightly animations include DJs and occasional live acts. Opening time: Mon– Fri 7am–2am, Sat 9am–5am

    4 Erich Coffie 9 rue Joseph-Vié 05.61.42.04.27 Just west of the river in the quartier St-Cyprien, this is one of the city's liveliest and most enjoyable music bars (food available), with an eclectic music policy. Live bands most evenings. Opening time: Open Tues– Sat from 10pm

    5 The Frog & Rosbif 14 rue de l'Industrie Stop by this friendly British pub & micro-brewery, just off bd Lazare-Carnot, for a pint of Darktagnan stout, or one of their other excellent home-brews. Quiz nights, football and fish and chips draw a surprisingly international crowd. Opening time: Mon– Fri & Sun 5.30pm–2am, Sat 2pm–4am. Closed part Aug

    6 Hey Joe Place Héraclès Popular disco with theme nights on Thurs. Men pay €8, women get in free; happy hour midnight–1am. Opening time: Open daily 11pm–5am

    7 Le Petit Voisin 37 rue Peyrolières A neighbourhood place, just like the name says, laid-back during the day, and with DJs at night. Opening time: Open Mon– Fri 7.30am–2am, Sat 8am–4am. Closed mid-Aug

    8 L'Ubu 16 rue St-Rome 05.61.23.26.75 Long-standing pillar of the city's dance scene, which remains as popular as ever. Opening time: Mon– Sat 11pm till dawn
