Cafés, bars and nightclubs
1 Le Brighton 33 rue Auguste-Comte English pub with 200 different kinds of beer, and dancing. Opening time: Daily till around 3am or later
2 Le Chat Noir 20 av Garibaldi Just off place de la République, this is Dijon's most serious clubbing venue but not always its friendliest – especially if you're a group of young men. €10 entry includes a drink. Usually Thurs– Sat, but
www.lechatnoir.fr has the up-to-date programme.
3 Le Chez Nous just behind rue Quentin Tucked down a tiny alleyway just off rue Quentin, this is an authentic community bar with a proudly alternative ethos and a genuine atmosphere. Expect strip lighting, mismatched old tables, exhibitions and impromptu performances. Also does cheap bar snacks and fine wines by the glass.
4 Le Colors Centre Commercial Dauphine Probably the most popular student club, with the added advantage that it's dead central. Themed nights are organized regularly during term.
www.lecolors.net has full details of the programme.
5 Le Crockodil 88 rue Berbisey Inside is an attempted pub decor, though the electric dartboard doesn't quite convince. Outside is a very continental café terrace. A good place for an afternoon coffee leading into an early evening drink. Opening time: Mon– Sat till 2am
6 Rhumerie la Jamaïque 14 place de la République Popular with a trendy late-20s/early-30s crowd for its pricey cocktails and rock-opera decor; they have live bands most nights at 11pm, playing music ranging from rock to salsa to jazz. There's a younger vibe at weekends for the dancefloor and DJ downstairs. Opening time: Open Tues– Sat till 5am
7 Shanti 69 rue Berbisey. Great little hookah joint, decked out with divans in transcendental South Asian decor, serving delicious teas, non-alcoholic cocktails and flavoured sheesha (€8 for a tobacco pipe). Opening time: Closed Sun & Mon
8 L'Univers 47 rue Berbisey. Trendy and dark, this popular pub-bar has frequent student-run blues, jazz and rock concerts in the cellar. Opening time: Open till midnight and later
9 Au Vieux Léon 52 rue Jeannin Tiny, noisy, friendly little bar that's positively jumping with students. Decorated like an old-fashioned French café on acid. Opening time: Mon– Sat 6pm–2am
