Arrival

Rennes' gare SNCF ( 08.36.35.35.35), with TGVs to Paris and Brest, is south of the Vilaine, twenty-minutes' walk from the tourist office and a little more from the medieval quarter. A fast, efficient and ultra-clean métro system (Mon– Sat 5am–12.45am, Sun 7.15am–12.45am); connects the gare SNCF, the place de la République and the place Ste-Anne, as well as other destinations of less interest to visitors. Any one-way journey costs €1.20, or you can ride all day for €3.20.

Although the gare routière stands alongside the gare SNCF on boulevard Solferino, most local buses ( www.star.fr ) start and finish by the canal in the heart of town, on or near place de la République; the tourist office can supply a map of the bus routes. Rennes is a busy junction, with direct Illenoo services to Paimpont, Vitré, Fougères, St-Malo, Cancale, Dinan and Dinard ( 02.99.26.16.00, www.illenoo.fr ) and three or four Keolis Emeraude services to Mont St-Michel daily ( 02.99.19.70.80, www.keolis-emeraude.com ), departing Rennes' gare routière and timed to connect with arriving TGVs from Paris.
