    1 L'Atlantide Centre des Salorges, 16 quai Ernest-Renaud 02.40.73.23.23 Designer restaurant, with big views from the fourth floor of a modern block, that serves the contemporary French cuisine of chef Jean-Yves Gueho.     2 Chez L'Huître 5 rue des Petites-Écuries 02.51.82.02.02 Much as the name suggests, this lovely little restaurant specializes in oysters of all sizes and provenance; the "apérihuître" consists of six oysters and a glass of Muscadet for €8.50; you can also get smoked fish, fish soup and other simple dishes. Opening time: Open until late nightly, closed Sun lunch.

    3 Chez Madame Java 118 rue Basse-Île 02.40.04.20.88 A colourful and laid-back wine bar, with different food on offer most days and a garden out back for the summer. Live samba and reggae every second Sun in the winter.

    4 Author Pick La Cigale 4 place Graslin 02.51.84.94.94 Fabulous late nineteenth-century brasserie, offering fine meals in opulent surroundings, with seating at terrace tables or in a more formal indoor dining room. Fish is a speciality, with lunch options like the €16.90 tartare de thon. Also serves good breakfasts.

    5 Café Cult' 2 rue des Carnes 02.40.47.18.49. A friendly, good value café housed in a beautiful old beamed house. They serve two-course lunches for just €11 and cheap drinks later on, when it becomes a lively bar. Opening time: Until 2am, closed Sunday.

    6 Lieu Unique quai Ferdinand Favre 02.51.82.15.00 www.lelieuunique.com A truly unique place, this former LU biscuit factory now plays host to concerts, theatre, dance, art exhibitions, a book shop, a fair brasserie and a great bar, open until late. Check the website for event details.

    7 Rêves marins, crêpes marines 2 rue de Roi Albert 02.40.47.00.96 A boat-themed crêperie with a frequently changing menu of seriously original galettes, including braised duck and lobster in saffron. Opening time: Closed Sun, Mon & 2–7pm daily.
