1 L'Artichaut 56 Grande Rue. Lively café-bar serving organic snacks; the regular Thurs night jazz jam attracts a young, arty crowd. Closed Mon.
2 Les Aviateurs 12 rue des Soeurs. "Les Aviat", as it's known locally, is regularly packed with Strasbourg's fashionable intelligentsia sipping cocktails or draught Guinness until 4am. Evenings only.

L'Épicerie 6 rue du Vieux Seigle. This homely café is a reconstruction of an old-fashioned grocer's shop, with wooden tables, old boxes and jars. Substantial, very reasonably priced tartines (open sandwiches), served daily until midnight. Tartine with brie, honey and walnuts €5.
4 Le Gayot 6 Place du Marché-Gayot. One of the most frequented café-bars on this animated square. Open daily till 1.30am.
5 Jeanette et les Cycleux 30 rue des Tonneliers. A cycling theme predominates here, with canteen-style furnishings and bric-a-brac décor. Trendy little bar with cocktails, milkshakes and wines by the glass.
6 Le Roi et Son Fou 37 rue du Vieil-Hôpital. Appealing café and brasserie with a sunny terrace in a quiet square, popular with locals for its good value lunch menu (salads €10) and decent breakfasts (€7).

www.terresavin.com Excellent boutique wine shop/bar stocking over 1600 different wines from high-quality producers around France, with an emphasis on bio-dynamic wines. One of the few places in Strasbourg where you can taste top-notch wines by the glass (from €4). Lunchtime menu €14. Closed after 7.30pm and all day Sun & Mon.
8 Les Trois Brasseurs 22 rue des Veaux. Convivial bierstub, which brews its own beers. Tarte flambée from €5. Happy hour 5–7pm. Open daily till 1am.
