The aesthetically pleasing development of waterside Brindley Place – named after James Brindley, the eighteenth-century engineer who was responsible for many of Britain's early canals – contains mostly bars, shops and offices, as well as the city's celebrated Ikon Gallery. The gallery is housed in a rambling Victorian building and is one of Britain's most imaginative venues for touring exhibitions of contemporary art.
