The idiosyncratically shaped Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King is denigratingly known as "Paddy's Wigwam" or the "Mersey Funnel". Built in the wake of the revitalizing Second Vatican Council, it was raised on top of the tentative beginnings of Sir Edwin Lutyens' grandiose project to outdo St Peter's in Rome. Ceremonial steps mark the approach from Mount Pleasant and Hope Street, with a café-bar at the bottom and four huge bells at the top.
