Arrival

Main-line trains pull in to Lime Street Station, while the suburban Merseyrail system (for trains from Chester) calls at four underground stations in the city, including Lime Street and James Street (for Pier Head and the Albert Dock).

National Express buses use the station on Norton Street, just northeast of Lime Street, and local buses depart from Queen Square and Paradise Street.

Liverpool airport, officially named after John Lennon (0870/129 8484, www.liverpooljohnlennonairport.com ), is eight miles southeast of the city centre and served by the Airlink #500 bus (every 20–30min: 5.10am– midnight; £2); a taxi to Lime Street costs around £12.

Most ferries – from the Isle of Man, Dublin and Belfast – dock at the terminals just north of Pier Head, not far from James Street Merseyrail station. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company runs the ferries and Sea Cats to and from the Isle of Man ( 0871/222 1333, www.steam-packet.com ). Norfolkline ferries (0870/600 4321, www.norfolkline-ferries.co.uk ) dock at Twelve Quays on the Wirral, near Woodside ferry terminal (ferry or Merseyrail to Liverpool).
