Wooler
Stone-terraced WOOLER, a one-street market town, is within easy reach of Chillingham Castle and the nearby grazing lands of the fearsome Chillingham Wild Cattle. It's also the best base for climbs up The Cheviot (2674ft), seven miles to the southwest, which is the highest point in the Cheviot Hills. From Hawsen Burn, the nearest navigable point, it's two hours walking there and back. Wooler is also a staging-post on St Cuthbert's Way, the trail that cross the Cheviot Hills, which runs west from the town to Kirk Yetholm and beyond or northeast to Holy Island.
Frequent buses link Wooler with Berwick-upon-Tweed and Alnwick, the two nearest towns, and the bus station is set back off the High Street.
