Once you're refuelled, you can browse at leisure the various original artworks for sale in the Biscuit Factory complex. Opening time: Tues–Sat 10am–6pm, Sun–Mon 11am–5pm

3 Paradiso 1 Market Lane 0191/221 1240 Mellow café-bar hidden down an alley serving snacky food during the day, more substantial at night (like home-made pasta or the house special risotto).
4 Big Mussel 15 The Side 0191/232 1057. Mussels, chips and mayo served seven ways. A £6 lunch and "clock saver" dinner (5.30–7pm) provide value for money too.

7 Grainger Rooms 7 Higham Place 0191/232 4949 www.graingerrooms.co.uk This place is making a name for itself for its locally sourced, seasonal and organic menu, served in what used to be a gentlemen's club. Price: Two courses from £23.50
8 Mangos 43 Stowell St 0191/232 6522 www.mangos-uk.com A bit more stylish than most Chinatown eateries, Mangos offers traditional and new-wave Cantonese dishes, from dim sum and country-style hotpots towards sizzling-plate specials.
9 Salsa Café and Tapas Bar 89 Westgate Rd 0191/221 1022 A cosy, bare-boards place for a coffee, sandwich and tapas. There's San Miguel on draught and DJs some nights. Opening time: Mon– Thurs 11am–11pm, Fri & Sat 11am– midnight, Sun noon–11pm
10 Secco Ristorante Salentino 86 Pilgrim St 0191/230 0444 The menu mixes melt-in-the-mouth southern Italian dishes and Northumbrian ingredients, while the city's beautiful people congregate in the inordinately handsome top-floor bar. 11 Uno's 18 Sandhill 0191/261 5264 There are loads of budget Italian places in town but none quite so adept at delivering good food at decent prices. Price: Pizzas and pastas are £4.50 on weekdays before 7pm, or Sat before 5pm
