Angel of the North

Address: A1 at Gateshead (by car towards Gateshead South from the A167, or buses #21 or #21A)

For over a decade Antony Gormley's Angel of the North has stood sentinel over the A1 at Gateshead. Situated on what used to be a colliery's pithead baths, it has become the symbol of Tyneside and the country's most viewed sculpture. The sheer scale of its 175ft wingspan, which inclines slightly forward, makes the most impact and it's even more imposing close up, when the ribbed structure of the body and rough, rusty texture gradually become apparent.
