Oxfordshire, the Chilterns and the Cotswolds

Arrival

The train journey from London Paddington takes just an hour, a little longer by bus. From Oxford train station, it's a five- to ten-minute walk east to the centre.

The Oxford Bus Company ( 01865/785 400, www.oxfordbus.co.uk ) offers fast and frequent services to and from London Gatwick and Heathrow airports. They also operate many local bus services, supplemented by Stagecoach ( 01865/772 250, www.stagecoach-oxford.co.uk ). Long-distance and many county-wide buses terminate at the Gloucester Green bus station, in the city centre adjoining George Street. Most local and city buses terminate on the High Street and St Giles.

There's also a Park-and-Ride scheme, operated by the Oxford Bus Company ( 01865/785 400, www.oxfordbus.co.uk , with buses (daily Mon– Sat 6am–11pm, Sun 9am–7pm) travelling into the centre every fifteen minutes at peak times (every thirty minutes to an hour in the evening), from five large and clearly signed car parks on the main approach roads into the city. Parking costs are minimal, whereas parking in the city centre is – by municipal design – both inordinately expensive and hard to find.
