Millennium Bridge
The first new bridge to be built across the Thames in London since Tower Bridge opened in 1894, the sleek, stainless-steel Millennium Bridge is London's sole pedestrian-only crossing. A suspension bridge of innovative design – the high-profile triumvirate responsible were sculptor Anthony Caro, architect Norman Foster and engineers Ove Arup – it famously bounced up and down when it first opened in 2000 and had to be closed for another two years for repairs. It still wobbles a bit, but most people are too busy enjoying the spectacular views across to St Paul's Cathedral and Tate Modern to notice.
