Getting around

By train

The British train network has suffered chronic under-investment for decades, and fares are some of the highest in Europe. Cheap deals do exist, but the bafflingly complicated pricing system makes them hard to find.

Generally speaking, avoid rush hours (especially Friday evening), and book your ticket as far in advance as you can to get the best deals. Always ask the person selling you your ticket to specify the cheapest options open to you. If you're travelling on routes between major cities at busy times, especially during public holidays or around Christmas, you should book a seat. Reservations are usually free if made at the same time as ticket purchase. National Rail Enquiries ( 0845/748 4950, www.nationalrail.co.uk ) has details of all train services; or you can buy online at www.thetrainline.com .

The InterRail ( www.interrailnet.com ) One Country Pass for Great Britain is available for three to eight days travel within a month and starts at £136.
