Getting around

By bus

The bus services run by National Express ( 0870/580 8080, www.nationalexpress.com ) duplicate many intercity rail routes, very often at half the price or less. If you're a student, or under 26 you can buy a National Express Coachcard (£10), which gives up to thirty percent off standard fares. Their BritXplorer Pass offers unlimited travel for visitors at £79 for seven days, £139 for two weeks and £219 for a month.

EasyBus ( www.easybus.co.uk ) offers services for as low as £1, while Megabus ( www.megabus.com/ ) has a range of popular city-to-city journeys, again starting at £1.

Local bus services are run by a bewildering array of companies, but there are very few rural areas which aren't served by at least the occasional minibus.
