Entry requirements

EU citizens have the right of free movement and residence throughout the UK, with just a passport or identity card. US, Canadian, South African, Australian and New Zealand citizens can stay in the country for up to six months without a visa, provided they have a valid passport. Most other nationalities – but not citizens of Switzerland or EEA countries like Norway – require a visa, obtainable from the British consular office in the country of application. The Isle of Man has its own immigration laws and policies, but UK visa offices can issue visas for the island. For current details about entry and visa requirements, consult the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office's visa website, www.ukvisas.gov.uk .

Citizens of EU countries who want to stay in the UK other than as a short-term visitor or tourist can apply for a residence permit. Non-EU citizens can apply to extend their visas, though this must be done before the current visa expires. In both cases, you should first contact the Border andImmigration Agency, Lunar House, 40 Wellesley Rd, Croydon CR9 2BY ( 0870/606 7766, www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk ); there are other offices in Liverpool and Birmingham. US, Canadian, South African, Australian and New Zealand citizens who want to stay longer than six months will need an entry clearance certificate, available from the British consular office at the embassy/high commission in their own country.
