Getting around

East Anglia's train network is at its best to and from London, with quick and frequent services from the capital to all of the region's major towns, including Norwich, Cambridge and Ely. Once you get away from the major towns, however, you'll have to rely on local buses, whose services, run by a multitude of companies, are very patchy. Indeed, in parts of north Norfolk and inland Suffolk, you may find the only way to get about is by your own transport. The largest regional bus operator is First ( www.firstgroup.com ).

Given the prevailing flatness of the terrain, hiking in East Anglia is less strenuous than in most other English regions, and there are several long-distance footpaths. The main one is the Peddars Way ( www.nationaltrail.co.uk ), which runs north from Knettishall Heath, near Thetford, to the coast at Holme, near Hunstanton, where it continues east as the Norfolk Coast Path to Cromer – 93 miles in total.
