Pubs

Anchor 12 Silver St Very popular riverside tourist haunt with an outdoor deck – and adjacent punt rental.

Champion of the Thames 68 King St Gratifyingly old-fashioned central pub with decent beer and a student/academic clientele.

Eagle 8 Bene't St An ancient inn with a cobbled courtyard where Crick and Watson sought inspiration in the 1950s, at the time of their discovery of DNA. It's been tarted up since and gets horribly crowded, but is still worth a pint of anyone's time.

Author Pick Free Press 7 Prospect Row, off Melbourne Place Classic, superbly maintained backstreet local with real-ale brews and delicious bar food: freshly prepared grub, from sandwiches and snacks at lunchtimes to heartier meals at night.

The Pickerel 30 Magdalene St Once a brothel and now one of several pubs competing for the title of the oldest pub in town, the Pickerel has a lively atmosphere and offers a good range of beers beneath its low beams.
