Cambridge Chop House 2 King's Parade 01223/359 506 www.cambscuisine.com/thechophouse The cafés facing King's College have always been low-key and downbeat, but this flashy place stands out – and is perhaps the face of things to come. Large, bistro-style premises and a menu with an emphasis on locally produced, seasonal ingredients such as mutton Barnsley chop with winter greens. Price: Mains £13–20 Opening time: Open daily for lunch and dinner

Clowns 54 King St Cappuccino and cakes, sandwiches and snacks, plus newspapers to browse. Off the tourist route and not part of a chain – bonuses in anyone's books. Opening time: Daily 8am– late

Eraina Taverna 2 Free School Lane 01223/368 786 Packed Greek taverna, which satisfies the hungry hordes with huge platefuls of stews and grills, as well as pizzas, curries and a whole host of other menu madness. Try to avoid getting stuck in the basement, though at weekends (when you'll probably have to queue) you'll be lucky to get a seat anywhere. Price: Mains from £6

Michaelhouse Café Trinity St Good-quality café food – snacks, salads and so forth – in an attractively renovated medieval church. Great central location too. Opening time: Mon– Sat 9.30am–5pm

Author Pick Midsummer House Midsummer Common, beside the footbridge just to the east of Victoria Ave 01223/369 299 www.midsummerhouse.co.uk With two Michelin stars and a lovely riverside location, this is a Cambridge highlight. Reservations essential. Price: Two courses £47.50 Opening time: Tues 7–9.30pm & Wed– Sat noon–1.45pm & 7–9.30pm

Rainbow Vegetarian Bistro 9a King's Parade 01223/321 551 www.rainbowcafe.co.uk Vegetarian restaurant with main courses that range from couscous to lasagne and Indonesian gado-gado and organic wines. Price: Mains about £8 Opening time: Tues– Sat 10am–10pm

Restaurant 22 22 Chesterton Rd 01223/351 880 www.restaurant22.co.uk One of the best restaurants in Cambridge, a candlelit townhouse which offers a good-value, fixed-price menu featuring dishes like sautéed squid with chorizo and a steamed sea bream and shellfish broth. Price: Mains around £27 Opening time: Tues– Sat 7–9.45pm

Author Pick Trockel, Ulmann und Freunde 13 Pembroke St Café food at its best in bright, creatively decorated premises. The baguettes have wholesome fillings – hummus and avocado, for example; the soups are hot and tasty; and the cakes are simply delicious. Tends to get packed during term time. Price: Mon– Fri 9am–5pm, Sat 10am–5pm
