Cumbria and the Lakes
Getting around
National Express coaches connect London and Manchester with Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere and Keswick. Trains leave the West Coast main line at Oxenholme, north of Lancaster, for the branch line service to Kendal and Windermere. The only other places directly accessible by train are Penrith, further north on the West Coast line, and the towns along the Cumbrian coast. The summer-season Cross Lakes Shuttle (
015394/45161,
www.mountain-goat.com , or www.lake-district.gov.uk ) – integrating boats and buses – connects Bowness-on-Windermere with Hawkshead, Hill Top (Beatrix Potter house), Coniston Water and Grizedale Forest. The one-day Stagecoach Explorer Ticket (£9;
www.stagecoachbus.com/northwest ) is valid on the entire local bus network, while Traveline (
0871/200 2233,
www.traveline.org.uk ) can advise about all the region's bus, coach, rail and ferry services.
