Klatovy
Tightly walled in and nervously perched on high ground, KLATOVY (Klattau) warns of the approaching border with Germany. Founded by Přemyslid King Otakar II in 1260, the town's great prosperity in the middle ages is still visible in the main square, but it can't compete with the Rose Towns further east. Still, there's enough here to pass a couple of hours; with Plzeň only an hour away by train it's another possible day-trip, or a potential base for exploring the northwest tip of the nearby Šumava region (The Šumava).
