Getting Around

The centre of Prague, where most of the city's sights are concentrated, is reasonably small and best explored on foot. At some point, however, in order to cross the city quickly or reach some of the more widely dispersed attractions, you'll need to use the city's cheap and efficient public transport system, known as dopravní podník or DP ( www.dpp.cz ), comprising the metro and a network of trams and buses. To get a clearer picture, invest in a city map that marks all the tram, bus and metro lines.

    Boats on the Vltava

In the summer there's a regular boat service on the River Vltava run by the PPS (Pražská paroplavební společnost; 224 930 017, www.paroplavba.cz ) from just south of Jiráskův most on Rašínovo nábřeží. There are also three or four boats a day to Troja (see Stromovka) in the northern suburbs (May to mid-Sept daily; April & mid-Sept to Oct Sat & Sun only; 200Kč return) and weekend services south to Slapy (May to mid-Sept Sat & Sun; 340Kč) and Mělník on two Sundays in July and August (490Kč return).

In addition, the PPS also offers boat trips around Prague (April to mid-Sept daily 1–2hr; 190–290Kč) on board a 1930s paddlesteamer. Several other boat companies run smaller boat trips around Charles Bridge. There are pedalos for hire from near the Charles Bridge and a wider range of boats from the northern tip of Slovanský ostrov.
